Department of Foreign Languages There are a number of trips that the Foreign Languages department will be participating in this summer. Dr. Claudia Vance, Associate Professor, will be traveling to Mexico with several students. Dr. Robert Adler, Associate Professor, has embarked on his annual trip to Spain. Assistant Professor Dr. Keith Lindley is currently in France with the Study Abroad program. The Oral Proficiency Projct, a push to improve the foreign language speaking ability of students, was started this past spring semester, The basic premise of the project is a simple conversation that takes place between the professor and the student. This “interview” will help the student learn more complex grammatical structures and improve the overall ability to speak the language, rather than just focusing on achievement tests and assessments. |
| Department of Computer Information Systems In its third year of a fully updated curriculum, the CIS department attracts students from around the country to the program. Any student that takes a CIS class has access to Microsoft Academic Alliance, an inexpensive way to get software. Many students in the department work in interships or in co-op arrangements. Group advising is available for freshmen and sophomores, a feature not widely seen in many campus departments. Consider joining a learning community that will include a CIS class and an English class. Distance learning classes are available as well. |

Center for Writing Excellence The Center for Writing Excellence, established less than one year ago, is the place to go on campus for one-on-one writing tutorials. With over 1600 visits last semester, this Stone Lodge based writing center has received the go-ahead to expand its staff, hours and available workshops. This fall will even see the beginning of online writing tutorials, specifically for students enrolled in distance learning courses. Dr. Robert Koch, the director of the Center was hired in the fall of 2007 and has already brought tremendous advancements to the Center. Make it a goal this coming school year to meet with one of the fifteen writing tutors to improve writing skills and enhance academic paper quality. |
