SETTING GOALS - SGA said that the purpose of the retreat was to set goals for the school year and unite the group under a common purpose.

The SGA Senate recently cemented their goals for the school year.

On Sept. 19, the senate

traveled to Crow's Neck Environmental Education Center in Tishomingo, Miss. for their annual retreat.

The purpose of this retreat was to set goals and unite the group under a common purpose.

After much deliberation and discussion, the retreat proved to be a success.

President Winn Brewer said, "I have been a part of SGA retreats for four years and never have I seen such ambition and drive in a group of senators.

"Six hours were spent in an auditorium discussing and determining which of our some 80 proposed goals would be chosen for the undertaking of SGA this year."

Out of those 80 proposed ideas, the senators finally narrowed

their goals into nine main categories:

1) Green Campus Initiatives: Promoting a more energy efficient and eco-friendly UNA

2) Parking and Parking Security: Working to develop

a more structured parking

system and promote more safety for our students

3) Campus Enhancement: Developing a campus that more handicapped accessible and more easily accessible

4) Finishing Past Goals: Following up on past UNA goals: completion of intramural

field, honor cord proposal, and college debit card

5) Student Policies/Procedures and Technology: Working with the University for Book Swaps, Extended Hours, and even more strengthened international orientation

6) Housing & Residence Life: Improved internet 12 month housing, and exploring

options of visitation privileges

7) Continued Learning: Promotion of the development of our Study Abroad Program, offering Interpersonal Projects with professors and building student connection with the university

8) Strengthened SGA: Restructuring of current SGA, create an SGA chamber and fulfill the purpose of Higher Education Day by promoting rallying and lobbying for a more equally divided cut of government funding toward colleges and universities

9) Student Involvement: More intramurals and more Recognized Student Organization joint programming

SGA says they have realized

the problems on campus, and have begun the process of addressing them.

SGA Senate Pro Tempore Samuel Thigpen said, "I believe all of the goals for this year are realistic and achievable, and the ones that may seem long term, this year SGA can at least get the ball rolling on some of them for next years SGA."

Winn Brewer says it all as he adds, "This is going to be a very productive year. From senate, to UPC, to Freshman Forum, this year's members are dedicated and ready to make a difference. Get ready UNA, because this year our SGA is ready to create tomorrow's

excellence."
