Lions softball is cruising through Division I teams

Over halfway done with the season, the Lions softball team has taken full advantage of their first Division I year with a 15-10 record out of the 41-game schedule. The Lions started their season on a blazing 5-0 record with wins over UAB, Alcorn State and Samford before suffering their first loss against Jacksonville State.

The Lions have played in four major tournaments which include, Alabama State Black and Gold, Michelle Short Memorial Collegiate Classic, Tennessee State Tiger Classic and the Memphis Tiger Classic.

In their first tournament the Lions played a total of three teams, Jacksonville State, UT Martin and Purdue-Fort Wayne. The Lions lost two of three games during the tournament losing to Jacksonville State 1-2, Purdue Fort-Wayne 6-8, and they beat UT Martin 3-2.

In the Michelle Short Memorial Classic, the Lions won two of the three games in the tournament. They beat Jackson State 8-0, Central Arkansas 10-1 and lost to South Dakota State 5-6.

In the Tennessee State Tiger Classic the Lions dominated competition with two wins over Portland State 2-1 and Marist 9-0. This would be their best tournament with no losses coming from them.

The Memphis Tiger Classic held to be the toughest thus far with Division I teams such as Memphis, Murray State and No. 10 Texas Tech. The Lions defeated Memphis 2-1 and Murray State 3-2. The Lions lost to No.10 TTU by three runs with a score of 2-5.

The Lions have only played six home games through their first 25 games, and are only looking at eight more before the season ends, with a total of 14 on the year. The Lions have only played one ASUN conference series, against North Florida at home.

The Lions dropped two of the three games to NFU and were outscored 14-11 throughout the series. The Lions have played six home games and have a 2-4 record against opponents. The Lions have allowed 22 runs at home for an average of 3.67 runs allowed per game. The Lions have scored 20 runs in the six games for an average of 3.3 runs per game.

During the next 16 games, the Lions are looking at six ASUN conference series games against Stetson, Florida Gulf Coast, Lipscomb, Kennesaw State, Liberty and Jacksonville. Amongst those games they also play Austin Peay, Murray State and Memphis again.
